Add Search Internet link in Start Menu (Windows 7)

16.Nov.2009 | by Gusac | Filed in: Articles, Tweaks

Windows 7 lets you search Internet right from the start menu itself. So you don't have to open browser to search anything on internet. Simply click on Start and type, it will show you the option to search on the internet.

There are two methods to achieve this: via Group policy or via Registry. Let's have a look at both the methods one by one:

Registry modification:

  • Go to Registry Editor. Start Menu > regedit.exe

  • Navigate to the following location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer (Create the following key if it does not exist)

  • Highlight the key 'Explorer' and click on 'Edit' menu, then the option 'New'. Select REG_DWORD from the list. In the right pane, we would have new DWORD value with name 'New Value #1'.

  • Rename the new DWORD value as: AddSearchInternetLinkInStartMenu

  • Once renamed, right click on it and choose Modify. Enter the value data: 1

  • Close the Registry Editor. That is it! Following is the screenshot:

Group Policy modification

Now, Lets see how to perform the same task via Group policy. Follow the steps provided below:

  • In the Start menu search box, type Gpedit.msc and hit Enter

  • Go to User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Start Menu and Taskbar.

  • Double-click 'Add Search Internet link to Start Menu' and from the screen that appears, select Enabled. Then click OK and close the Group Policy Editor.

And now when you type something in Start Menu search box, it will give you an option to 'Search the Internet'. Clicking it will launch the default web browser with the search results.
